1912 Stockholm Olympics
The 1912 Stockholm Olympics was the first time athletes came from all five continents. Mighty Jim Thorpe, a Native American from Oklahoma, became a legend by winning the pentathlon and decathlon by huge margins. When King Gustav V of Sweden presented the gold medals to Thorpe, he stated: “You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world,” to which Thorpe replied, “Thanks, King.”
